Description
This article deals with a particular aspect of early library services in Australia: the problems and challenges related to providing catalogue access to a library in nineteenth-century regional Victoria. Maintaining a usable catalogue presented numerous challenges in the days before catalogue cards and the undreamed-of ease of automation. The systems themselves often worked against this goal. The regional library in question is the library of the Sandhurst Mechanics Institute, founded in 1854 and situated in Bendigo, Victoria. The library of the Institute operated from 1856 until its closure in 1946. When the Mechanics Institute folded in 1904, the library was taken over by the Bendigo School of Mines, which the Mechanics Institute had founded in 1871, and which is the predecessor institution of the present-day local university campus.
